Over the last few weeks I’ve been listening to the experts. Want to know what’s popular in the world of kitchens right now? There are designs with timeless appeal, others that offer state-of-the-art contemporary style, some fitted, others unfitted. No two kitchens are the same. You can spend a lot, or a little, but every penny will be throughly considered; a new kitchen is not an impulse buy. So, to help you think about the priorities for your new kitchen here’s a short review of what’s happening in the kitchen showroom.
COLOUR: Images of all white kitchens are highly popular on-line. This aspirational look satisfies the wish for a clean, easy to maintain, hygienic kitchen. The fresh white kitchen is simple to obtain and can be chosen from any supplier in any style. You can easily find a handle-less contemporary white kitchen or choose a more traditional look with stainless steel door furniture. White is way out in front in terms of popularity, but other colours are being chosen for their character and warmth; grey/black, dark blue and heritage green. These stronger colour options can be accessorised in gold, brass or bronze.
APPLIANCES: Integrated appliances make the space neater and less fussy but if you want to show off a space-age fridge, your designer can incorporate it as a free-standing item with everything else behind doors. Ranges are rarely mentioned but hobs, especially induction hobs, are way ahead. Even professional cooks find these better than gas for obvious reasons; easy to clean, immediate response, quicker cooking. And I learned that gas isn’t great for open plan kitchens because the flame accentuates smells.
Wine cooling fridges are popular, and dish-washing drawers as well. Find space for them in your kitchen, move out the washing machine and freezer. The boiling hot-water tap is seen by some as an essential but not by all. And side-by-side ovens (one being a full size microwave oven) means you can get a lot of food ready simultaneously.
NEW: We want to spend time in the kitchen, we want to make the kitchen central to family life. We want the kitchen look, not like a kitchen but homely, like a lounge. These unfitted units from SieMatic are designed to fulfil these needs simply and stylishly. Their sturdy elegant legs allow you to see the floor run under them. I love them, they’re the perfect answer to open-plan living.
